Abstract

Acridone-based molecules have garnered considerable attention in recent years due to their promising therapeutic potential in cancer treatment. These molecules, derived from acridone, a heterocyclic compound, exhibit a diverse range of biological activities, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Research has demonstrated that acridone derivatives can effectively interact with various cellular targets, including DNA, enzymes, and receptors involved in cancer cell proliferation, survival, and metastasis. Their capacity to modulate key signaling pathways, such as those governing apoptosis and cell cycle regulation, positions acridone-based compounds as potential candidates for targeted cancer therapies. In this article, we examine the molecular mechanisms by which acridone derivatives exert anti-cancer effects, focusing on their role in inhibiting tumor growth, inducing cell death, and preventing metastasis. Additionally, the challenges and opportunities in the development of acridone-based anti-cancer agents are discussed, including issues of bioavailability, toxicity, and the optimization of their pharmacokinetic profiles. We also highlight recent advancements in the synthesis of novel acridone derivatives with enhanced anticancer activity, as well as ongoing clinical trials that may pave the way for their future use in oncology. This review underscores the potential of acridone-based molecules in revolutionizing cancer treatment strategies and provides a comprehensive understanding of their pharmacological properties and therapeutic promise.
